UNHCR releases supplementary COVID-19 appeal to meet exceptional refugee needs in 2021.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, released today its supplementary appeal for 2021 COVID response seeking an additional US$455 million.

While most of the pandemic-related activities amounting to $477 million have been already mainstreamed and included in UNHCR’s 2021 Global Appeal totaling $8.616 billion, the supplementary COVID-19 response released today focuses on exceptional socioeconomic and protection impacts related to COVID-19 as millions of refugees, internally displaced and stateless people fall into conditions of extreme hardship.

Monitoring carried out by UNHCR since the onset of the pandemic paint a bleak picture of the well-being and protection of refugees and others of concern, with 74 per cent of them now able to meet only half or less of their basic needs, and 83 per cent engaging in one or more negative coping mechanisms to meet their basic needs.

Right now, the New Zealand bottom trawling fleet is setting out for yet another season of destruction. Each year, out of sight, the NZ fishing fleet go on the hunt for orange roughy using one of the most destructive forms of fishing ever devised. They have to be stopped, and one of the first things we need to do is make people aware of what’s really going on out there.

New Zealand trawl fleet to continue destruction of deep-sea ecosystems
in South Pacific on the high seas.

New Zealand and Australia to adopt a deeply flawed regulation that will allow continued degradation and destruction of biologically rich and diverse ecosystems in the deep-sea from the Louisville Ridge in the western central South Pacific all the way across to the Tasman Sea.

We’ve stopped environmental crimes in the past and held companies to account. Together in our thousands, we’re forcing change and seeing results.

More and more people are saying ‘no’ to trashing the oceans, forests and climate – and standing up to protect our air, land and water from pollution.

SIERRA CLUB — — CLIMATE CHANGE THREATENS TWO THIRDS OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS — LOCOMOTIVES — PLANET EARTH BACK IN THE DAY group

All PLANET EARTH groups supports:

Sierra Club* United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) * American Bird Conservancy

PLANET EARTH BACK IN THE DAY has over 7,200 members and over 420,000 photos and videos.

A new report from the National Audubon Society shows that two-thirds of North America’s birds face major challenges including extinction if global temperatures are allowed to increase 3 degrees Celsius by 2100. However, if temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees, the majority of those disruptions can be stopped.

The report, Society Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink, is a major update of Audubon’s influential 2014 Birds and Climate Change Report, which examined the impacts and range shift of 588 birds in North America under various climate scenarios. In the new report, researchers looked at data for 604 species collected from 70 sources including over 140 million individual records of birds. They were able to overlay this information with data on human land use, agriculture, and urbanization trends that were not available in 2014. The researchers were able to model this data at a resolution of one square kilometer, 10 times finer than the scale used in the 2014 report.
