BIRD OF THE WEEK
SHORT-TAILED ALBATROSS
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Phoebastria albatrus
POPULATION: 4,200 individuals
TREND: Increasing
HABITAT: Spends most of its life over northern Pacific Ocean; breeds on islands off Japan and more recently, Midway Atoll
Because of its small population, Short-tailed Albatross is listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and considered Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN Red List.
A number of conservation measures have slowly increased the number of birds from its historical low nearly 75 years ago. One of these is conservation of habitat at the species’ main breeding site, Torishima (literally, “bird-island” in Japanese).
